January 21, 2017: Minus ten yet sunny on my way to Chomutov's hinterland

Garmin Activity: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1544013753
136km, 6h07, elevation 1390m. Trip rating 75%

The roads looked fine today, so I took my flatbar rather than my MTB out. It was still very cold.

I had planned to go to Chomutov, where I had a booking. Distance was around 130 km only.

My GPS sent me in the direction of Odolena Voda

Last time I was here was in October 2016.

Still in full winter garment. It was bearable though

It had not snowed in the previous days but it was still minus 10. The result was white fields but accessible roads.

A little over 30 km brought me to the Ustecky region.

Sunshine and snow

Whoops! Something happened to the sign that indicates Stredocesky Kraj and Okres Melnik: Last time it was OK

The first leg of this ride was very similar to a ride I did in October, albeit with different landscapes

I loved how my bike looked with these yellow reflective attributes

Elevation 400 here. I took a video report here.

Snow white fields

Lonely rider on a lonely day. I enjoyed the solitude today, which gave me time for meditation.

And then a new section opened up for me.

60 km completed here, 70 to go

Peruc was the next town in the list. Nice castle-church in front of me.

Lovely bike! It will be my buddy for cycling to Baku

Very empty out here

Some nice views prompted me to take pictures

Mind the glance of sun on the crankset.

Thumbs up for a genuine winter ride

The further I went, the more I began to believe that I should have taken my road bike.

Hard not to think about Christmas like this

I had 70 km in the pocket here and I stopped to share a status on Facebook.

Couldn't stand too long though, as my fingers would freeze off... But honestly speaking, as opposed to last winter, I have been dressing very adequately now and that made it more endurable

Made another recording here. Good to have my camera on my helmet.

Another nice view

Keeping myself motivated in these harsh conditions in which I met no other cyclist

Closer look on a terrific vehicle

And then I somehow remembered where I was. i cycled here when I went all the way to Belgium

Boy that was a crazy ride with a super heavy backpack

A long descent through the small town of Smolnice led me here. I took a right here

This almost did not look like winter

From this spot it was just a little over 30 km. I ate a snack here and studied the map. I judged I had time to go to Jirkov and maybe even check out some mountains before going back to the hotel.

And from here one could reach Prague in 65 km.

Nice view of the castle in snow

And now with bike in the picture

Okres Most... It was the afternoon and the temperatures rose to -4, it was a lot less cold for me.

Afternoon meant the sun was already setting, short daylight...

More than 100 km accomplished is nice in this temperature

In between a lot of bigger cities: Pilzen, Teplice and Most.

Okres Chomutov, now I was close

I was rounding up this ride quite nicely

Not too obvious from the picture, but I could already see mountains around me

Where I stopped for my last post online

Beautiful winter afternoon

Too my big joy, the roads remained accessible the whole day

Jirkov, the little town next to Chomutov on the map. Here, I studied the map again and I decided I still had more than one hour to check out some of the mountains. So I recalculated and there I went!

That was not a success story. Here the roads were not accessible for this bike. Ice was everywhere. I headed back and called it a day

Careful on my descent

It was still 10 km to Chomutov and there were a few sharp ascents in the city.

I also bought some snacks in a Potraviny I found

Another beautiful sight.

Little creek

Then the misery began. I could not found the hotel

The address indicated on the gps was wrong and the google maps did not help me either. The hotel was located elsewhere

So I asked a few people for directions, luckily I speak Czech, and I knew where to go.

It was an extra five km, nothing bad, except for this snowy roads

No panic I told myself. I was even able to cycle at 10-12 kmph, provided that I looked where I was going. In the end I made it.

Prvni Mlyn; the first mill. I was here after a lovely six hour bike ride.

Made an extra video report to comment on this day

And then I went in, took a shower, had a meal and went to bed early

The numbers of my ride. Could have been 40 min less if I did not get lost.
