December 30, 2016: Impressions of Frymburk on an Icy and sunny day

Garmin Activity: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1507234594
29 km, 1h24, elevation 373m. Trip rating. 70%

Here I was, standing in Frymburk with a bike in the trunk of the car. How could I not use that opportunity for a cycling trip?

I assembled the bike which was very easy. two wheels and seat post, pump the tires and done.

I was a bit hesitant because I saw that the roads where a bit icy. Because of that I left at 11 and decided to make it a short ride.

The church of Frymburk, right across our Azeri Hotel Leyla

The roads were OK, at least the main roads. I headed in the direction of Lipno nad Vltavou

Bike paths were out of question

This was a 6 km stretch under the snow white trees. Beautiful from the very beginning.

I was at 750 meters height, roughly 500 more than Prague and 700 more than my home town in Belgium.

I did not take all my clothes, but I could still bear this -4

I lowered the pressure on my tires to 70 PSI, to guarantee myself that I have maximum grip.

The area where I am cycling, along lake Lipno

The lake looks frozen

The sun was at its highest peak of the day and that was truly magnificent

And not a single cloud in the sky

Let\s call it a snowy summer day

Lake Lipno

Here, I saw more ice on the roads and it was going downhill. That is why I decided to head back to Frymburk.

This ride was not about numbers, it was rather about the views and the moments.

In summer days this would be a nice cycling path.

On this 30th of December it would be a disaster on two wheels

Frozen lake

Spectacular view

Apparently this area is part of the Sumava natural park

I decided the ride should not stop here, I went a bit further...

There are two roads there and I explored them both

This is the road that leads to Cesky Krumlov. I passed it by car some six weeks ago.

It was 12.30 and the sun was at its absolute peak for the day

Highest point here was at 850 meters, pretty darn high!

Magnificent

Fabulous! I realized this was a very unusual view, the snow white carpet under a cloudless sky and bright sunlight

Since the sun was on top of these roads, they were not icy at all

And then it went into descent

Driving a car makes you miss out on some nice details such as wind, elevation gain and the differences between sun-shed and shadowy places. On a bike, these details are omnipresent

On the shadow side of the hill I felt bit less secure, there could be some slippery parts.

For that reason I decided not to descent further

I headed back to Frymburk

The trees

Then I went into the only remaining road, which was very steep with 15%

This was the area where Narmin and I drove in November. That unforgettable moment Friday night in the mountains

Everything looked so nice in the sun

I had this unstoppable urge of taking pictures, it is very rare that this kind of weather arrives

It looked very different in daylight

Again at  850 meters

Cow

And then the road abruptly ended for me, no way of going through this snow.

So I went back to Frymburk, for real this time

A nice descent on rim brakes, no sweat in dry weather

Only 30 km, but many pictures and views

Still happy about it

Welcome back to Frymburk
