Another day of snow white craziness here in Czechia, although it melted a bit the last days and not much new snow came. It made me think a little about taking the road bike. I correctly judged that was out of the question though..
I planned 125 k to Hradec Kralove, knowing it would be very flat and with a train ride back to Prague. To make sure I took the right way, I used the ride I did in 2015. I followed the exact same track on my GPS
I took my action cam so I could make some nice video clips as well.
Bike lanes in Zelenec; right before crossing 101 to Mstetice:
It was -3 and I wore one layer of clothes less than the -15 ride last week. I didn't feel cold
Very correct in damning my road bike to hell for this weekend. It would be a recipe for disaster
This winter is noticeably harsher than last year's, with more snow and lower temperatures but also longer continuous stretches of snow and ice. It is like this for a full two weeks already
Some dangerous patches of ice on my way to Nehvizdy. Cars had to brake and stop for this as well.
The stretch next to the freeway. It had begun snowing intensely and I made a videoclip of it here. I
I remember doing this patch of offroad on my road bike with 25mm tires in the dark on the 21th of November 2015. It was quite annoying. Today with the snow I did not see the rocks well which got me bumping.
At this moment it is snowing badly. You can even see some snow accumulate on my jacket.
Something shocked me: when I did that very first ride in 2015, I got up so early that I did the first 50 km in the darkness. Today I was repeating that exact same spot, but I remembered this area from different rides. So that day I also passed here? I totally do not remember. Very strange feeling
It is the road that goes to Cesky Brod and more specifically the place where my friend Jan lives, Poricany.
It was going a lot slower on my snow bike, but being outside was a victory itself.
It began snowing so intensely that I aborted the idea to go to Hradec Kralove. At this rate even Kolin, a mere 60 km, would be a challenge. I thought I could go visit Jan while I was here, but he was not home. I did meet his dad though. There is always next time...
From there I decided to take a train in Cesky Brod, it would be safer than facing a downright blizzard
Look at my helmet, it was fading away under the snow.
Cesky Brod was 8 km away and I would have done around 45 km upon arrival
When I came in Cesky Brod, I cycled next to the station and the next train was 40 min away. Moreover it would drop me off at an annoying station in central Prague. So I decided to do the 30 km home myself.
For a moment I truly regretted that. The snow became very fierce; so fierce that my vision was almost zero. I hid under this bus waiting zone and made a small video report to show it to the world;
Snow on the roads was also accumulating because of it
For the next few km I followed route 245
Hanging in there after 50 km in the snow.
That road took me back to a point I had already visited the same day, but I saw another nice way back to Prague: following Stara Boleslav
It didn't take me long to understand I had also visited this part before, on one of those short rides before work. Finding new terrain is becoming increasingly difficult
The only moments that I felt cold was when the wind was strong
The city center of Celakovice, one of the many cities along the Labe.
I found myself again on this cycle path in Zelenec. This time it was fully covered in snow.
Of course I made another video report here
Heading back home for a ride of 80 km
I hope that this winter will pass. I am longing for long days cycling spring
BART! I had to do some snow-art
At Ctenice castle I took one of those roads I had not taken before. I realized this was the offroad section that led to Prezletice. Nice discovery!
After that another offroad section led to Miskovice. Two discoveries in my own block
From here it was only 2 km to Cakovice
Last 1500 meters to my home. It had stopped snowing and I could have done a bit more mileage after all, but I was home now. Not a bad ride in the end.
