I was smart enough to buy some food at the restaurant I visited yesterday. Now I had a breakfast before my ride. I put on my clothes and took my bike out of the garage and hit the road.
Pension Fialka was nice. The 300 extra crowns did pay off
Ready for a new day on the bike
It was not as cold as yesterday, but still minus five. Moreover, unlike yesterday the skies were overcast and grey. There was a big fog and I knew sunlight would not be able to warm me up for the next few hours.
I was a little concerned that it might snow due to the thick clouds and the low temperatures. Therefore, I decided to not spend too much time taking pictures. Today's ride would be all about keeping momentum and making the miles.
Good thing the part from Cesky Krumlov up north was the section I already cycled in the last weekend of January. It runs through the tiny villages of Zlata Koruna and Dubne.
Misty skies made for a very chilly ride
I was packed in from top to toe. Czech winters are really rough
I stopped here for a sandwich and a banana. This is the area that goes to Kostelec. I am starting to memorize the roads by now. Maybe next time I could even go without a GPS.
Beautiful forest area with several ups and downs. Elevation was already around 500m
Picture of a tractor for my brother
The conditions were tough to say the least, but focusing on momentum and not fooling around did result in great progress.
Basically I was riding yesterday's ride backwards. Good part about that is you know where you are and what is still ahead of you.
This spot marked 1/3 of the trip, in distance, time and elevation gain.
Again, nothing was going on here. Just me riding my bike. I think the Czech's preferred to stay inside.
3 hours out of 9, 1000 meters out of 30000 and 76 km out of 220. That is truly 1/3rd of the ride finished.
At the 100 km point, I stopped for another sandwich and a banana.
I was calculating the distance I had to accomplish every hour in order to be home before dark. My original calculation was that I wanted to have finished 100 km before noon. It was 11:06 when I stopped here. I even did 110 before 12 o clock. 50% of the ride was already in the pocket.
Today was February 28, 2-28. That is the date that marks the 228 massacre in Taiwan. How could I not think about this?
Your ordinary Czech village
Then there was a section with more climbing. I climbed all the way up to elevation 670m.
Mind that hill you see further down the road
At this high altitude, you will see a thick layer of fog and mist, which seriously decreases sight.
That's why I always ride in yellow and put on lights. No safety no nothing
Once again, the Christmas atmosphere befell upon me
I went left here, going for Nechvalice
From there the elevation dropped again and I entered Stredocesky Kraj. It was still 100 km from here, but I felt closer to home. Also, there would be less climbing than in Southern Bohemia.
Crappy roads in the Czech hinterland
I stopped here for a lunch as well. After ten minutes standing still I was completely freezing.
It was still minus five and the winds were attacking me constantly.
I kept cycling until I was super hungry. Then I stopped for my snack.
Somewhat later in a tiny town, I saw a Potraviny that was open. Must be an Asian running it then. I bought some drinks and rice cookies.
A few hours in the afternoon, I was sure I would make it back before darkness. It was only 54 km from here. This is the town of Tynac Nad Sazavou.
This spot marks 50 km to my doorstep
Now there was a lengthy uphill through the forest area called Cakovice. However, it was not as steep as I had thought. Most of it was only 2%.
That climb led me to Praha-Vychod, which borders with the city of Prague. Home was close, but still some elevation to take here. There was even a spot at 480m elevation near Petrikov.
The last time I cycled back to Prague like this, it was already dark. Still 20 km from here.
Kbely in Prague, Cakovice was now within 4 km.
Little airfield of Letnany
Not long after that, I arrived home. One km before my arrival there was a car that nearly hit me. It sped up to go in front of me but it only realized it would not make it at the very end. Then it hit the brakes hard. I kinda got scared there. That arrogant asshole did not even apologize. What an asshole.
But what matters is I made it home safely, with some nice numbers as well,
Cukrovarska in Prague-Cakovice, where all my cycling trips begin and end.
