April 2, 2016: Pedaling all day in between Czech hills and German mountains

Garmin Activity: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1110391772
262 km, 11h23, elevation 4067m. Trip rating: 90%

Another blockbuster ride this weekend! I left home around 05:30 am.

The first part was going through Prague city, not my favorite section

But it has to be done if I wanna go southwest and leaving early does help

The Vltava was foggy and it was still cold

I was wearing less clothes than on previous rides, but during the first two hours, that was a bad chocie

I went through the center, then eight km along the Vltava and then uphill, exiting Prague

It was even minus five out here, you can see it from the side of the roads.

The first 120 km of the ride was identical to my ride to Strakonice a few weeks earlier

After 9 am it began getting warm, finally!

My GPS sent me through some offroad, not fun!

After five hours of cycling ,I entered a new world. The Pilzen area. My first time here

Wide open and hilly fields

Some snapshots while I was riding

The weather was absolutely fabulous

At 12:42, I saw this quiet spot where I could enjoy my lunch. I did some map studying while I was at it.

The lunch was quick but good. Now let's face this afternoon!

Some crappy road sections here, it confirmed why I am riding with 28mm tires.

I found myself riding through a fairy tale landscape

All these roads had one final goal: getting me to Germany

I had my brakes revised a few days earlier and it was a delight to use them. So much bite and power on them!

Spending a full day in this area will result in a lot of snapshots, with good reason! Everything was worth a picture

Stunning views, who would want to stay in Prague of you can behold all of this?

Champion bike

It was getting really warm, so I decided to strip off more clothes. It felt strange to be cycling like this in Czechia. The past winter had shown me a different side of the country.

As I neared the border and thus the mountain range, elevation started rising. A lot! In one section I climbed all the way from 700 m to 965 m. It was a steep part too.

This area reminded me of Taiwan's Xitou in Nantou.

Hard to imagine this was almost one thousand meters above sea level.

This area is the Sumava nature park, located in the Suothwest mountain range.

Sumava nature park. Something nice happened here: my GPS was sending me through some offroad and I met a Czech guy who explained me that I should just stay on the main road, as it would also take me to Germany, but more pleasant for road bikes. I took him for his word.

Then the descent began, a first descent went all the way back to 800 meters.

There were also other cyclists here

If this is how the weather will be in the next few months, then I will come here more often.

Unbelievable that this is located at almost 1000 m.

Germany was near!

Some interesting history here, I was standing at the Iron Curtain border line.

The border that separated east and west during the cold war.

Striking to see, but today times are different and I could proceed without border control

Continuing my trip on the German side.

European cycling route 13

Next task was going north on the German side. There was a long climb here

I started climbing at 700 m, but I would go well over 1000 m.

I had no idea there was this kind of altitude within Germany

It was already late, but I still had two hours of daylight. Gotta love daylight savings time

Magnificent view

one thousand meters above sea level

Lohberg, that was the location I had selected by meticulously looking at the map

Lohberg, I was back at elevation 700 here.

Absolutely amazing all of this. This trip was getting Taiwanese explorations-like dimensions to me.

Incredible elevation gain on German side, at this rate I would do about 4000 meters.

It was less than 20 km to Vseruby from here. I had calculated that I would be neatly there at 19:30.

More climbing, Czechia was already indicated on the signs...

The last German town: Rittsteig

I love the word "Landesgrenze"

In the middle of the open fields I saw this border sign. Pretty funny.

The second border crossing of the day, welcome home!

There was still more climbing before I made it to Vseruby

The last 7 km were on a bigger road that had a slight descent. Perfect for cooling down.

After a crazy loop around Germany, I was here! And the time was 1920

No big troubles finding the hostel. Everything was fine here, quick shower, some food in a nearby restaurant and FB'ing about today's ride.

Statistics of yet another monster ride
