March 26, 2016: All the way from Prague to Jesenik in one day; crazy 268 km throughout Moravia

268 km, 10h56, elevation gain 3242m Trip rating 85%

Just like last weekend, I planned for a long ride: all the way to Jesenik in the north east. From the info I gathered online, this would appear to be in the mountains.

The first part of the ride went over Cesky Brod and Kutna Hora; which has already become very common to me. I think this is my third visit here in two months.

Early in the morning the weather did not look OK

Drops of rain fell from the skies, although no actual downpour followed.

From Kutna Hora it went further east, in the direction of Chrudim and Pardubice

The roads were tranquil as ever

In the cute little town of Hermanov Mestec

Okres Pardubice, this is where new stretches of land presented themselves to me.

Dark clouds in the skies, with occasional drops. Not your dream weather for a 260 km bike ride!

The simplicity of these views is striking, its contrast with Taiwan's dense mountain ranges still strikes me every single time.

The weather might suck, but at least I am shining from top to bottom. And I was in the mood for this killer ride. I had big numbers and statistics prepared and I had to live up to them.

These are wonderful panoramas. This is Czechia's real face

I stopped here for a quick snack. Already 150 km into the ride; with only 110km remaning. Compared to other rides, this one was pretty flat up to now. But obviously that would change as of here.

Probably no surprise that I was the only one cycling outside...

The temperatures were pretty nice and there was a lot of oxygen in the air. Good conditions!

At this point, it was a mere 100 km left to Jesenik.

According to my calculations, now would be the time that the majority of the elevation gain kicks in.

Ambitions as a rider!

I was sent through a very tiny and small bicycle lane here, did not even look like a bike path

As noon approached, the sun came out.

Good to know I would have better weather in the afternoon

It started to look real nice all of a sudden

I entered a hilly area, more short stingers here.

Magnificent views! This looks like the setting a a classical painting

I quickly stopped here because it was getting HOT! I needed to take off some clothing

Cute little church in the middle of sowhere

For the first time I climbed to elevation 600.

In the hills where absolutely nothing is going on...

Beautiful

Fabulous even!

I stopped here for a quick video report. This is one of these sceneries you just have to eternalize

All of the sudden I saw a sign indicating Poland. Was I that close? I had to go and check it out!

It really is Poland. First time in my lifetime that I entered Polish territory. Too bad I could not proceed here, because this was a freeway. So I turned back and proceeded my journey.

This is how the Czech Republic looked on this capricious weather day

Polska indeed!

The skies did not look very promising as I still had a good 70 km to roll

Another hill that climbed until 650 meters. Those mountains in front of me are where I was heading

I had cycled all the way through the extremely long Pardubice region. Now I found myself in the Olomouc region, this was also a first

What I did not understand, was that I was descending again, all the way back to 390 meter. Something did not feel right

Jesenik at only 30 km and still no serious elevation gain? Was I heading for a super steep finale?

It does not get much better than this, what an extraordinary sight!

The road was in a crappy conditions, but these views are simply amazing! And I went up again

I found a place name with my name in it: Ha-Bart-ice. The suffix "ice" means nothing more than place, so this would mean: Hey Bart place. Funny fact

Still I was not really gaining significant altitude. It was a mere 25 km to my destination. I began questioning if I would climb as high as the internet told me.

Little town in the middle of nowhere

The Jesenik region, this section was steep with 12% but the highest I got was 760 meters

Then another very long descent follwed

Which brought me all the way back to 400 meters. That's where I knew the elevation numbers were not correct.

Close to Jesenik. The sun was setting

A bit disappointed about the elevation, but I guess they meant the mountains themselves, not the town of Jesenik.

Only five km remaining from here

Welcome to Jesenik

Vita vas Obec Jesenik

The town looked really tranquil and peaceful

The hotel owner told me that I had to follow the street called Nerudova and go uphill 2.5 km. That turned out to be a super steep 2.5 km with 200m elevation gain.

I was well in time, so no stress. My 268km were safe for the day

Another nice view near the end of the day

Two things I did not like about this mountain path: 1) there was snow and I had to be careful as not to slip

2) there were these ridiculous rails every 20 meter. I had to get off my bike for these

At the very top, I found more snow

Luckily the pension was there. The people were very friendly, they had a restaurant and I had a good meal. The reaction of the people when I told them I had come from Prague in one day was just priceless haha!

Nice numbers again: 268 km, one Wuling in elevation (3250) and a nice 11 hours in the saddle. In the evening I chatted a little with my Taiwanese friends and then I hit the sack. It would be another killer ride on Sunday...
